Akeyama Arts Center

In Akiyamago, once designated as an area exempt from compulsory education, a closed school building from 2022 will open in 2024 as "a new school for learning the skills necessary for human survival from the mountains." It is a continuous space and project for exploring, learning, and sharing the wisdom and techniques for survival cultivated in Akiyamago, together with artists, residents, and researchers.

This hot spring is located in the center of Tokamachi City. It is also convenient for those coming by train, about a 10-minute walk from Tokamachi Station. The Museum on Echigo-Tsumari, MonET of is located in the same building, and next to it is the roadside station Cross10 Tokamachi, where you can enjoy viewing art, eating, and buying souvenirs.

Museum on Echigo-Tsumari, MonET

The base facility of the "Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale". The architecture was designed by Hara Hiroshi + ATLIERΦ, who also designed the Kyoto Station Building. Fifteen permanent works by artists from Japan and abroad are on display throughout the year, with special exhibitions held seasonally and a museum shop. In 2021, the museum reopened with a major relocation of the permanent collection.

Matsudai NOHBUTAI Field Museum (Collective name for multiple facilities and artworks)

The Matsudai NOHBUTAI is a base facility designed by Dutch architect group MVRDV. Approximately 40 works of art are scattered in a 2-km area of satoyama from Matsudai NOHBUTAI to Matsudai Castle at the top of the mountain, and the entire area is called the "Matsudai NOHBUTAI Field Museum.

Tunnel of Light (Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel)

One of Echigo-Tsumari's representative sights, the Kiyotsukyo Valley Tunnel has been refurbished by fusing it with art works. A tunnel with a total length of 750m is likened to a submarine cut off from the outside world.
*Advance reservations are required during peak seasons (GW, consecutive holidays, Obon, and autumn foliage season).

Hachi & Seizo Tashima Museum of Picture Book Art

※ The museum is closed during winter: from end of November to end of April
A walk-in picture book created by Seizo Tashima in 2009 in a former elementary school. The story behind this museum is based on the last three students of the school and visitors can physically experience the picture book as they walk through the museum. The space is filled with objects made of driftwood picked up in Izu Peninsula and from the Sea of Japan, reshaped to represent students, teachers, and even monsters.

Echigo Matsunoyama Kyororo Forest School

A comprehensive cultural facility exploring the theme of "Urban-Rural Exchange," dedicated to discovering and showcasing local resources. Approximately 40 artworks are scattered throughout its indoor and outdoor spaces. These pieces, inspired by the region's history, local scenery, people, and nature, engage all five senses to immerse visitors in the culture of this place. Enjoy the ever-changing art and the satoyama landscape throughout the seasons.

An artwork by light artist James Turrell. Modeled after the Hoshina Residence, a traditional local house and Important Cultural Property, it was conceived as a guesthouse for meditation. Turrell drew inspiration for this concept from Jun'ichirō Tanizaki's In Praise of Shadows, blending the intimate light of traditional Japanese houses with his own light artworks.

Matsudai History Museum

This history museum is a renovation of approximately 140-year-old Keyaki Minka (traditional Japanese house made of zelkova trees) which represents typical structure of the region with heavy snowfall in winter and displays tools and documentations of lifestyle of Matsudai area.

Isobe Yukihisa Memorial Echigo-Tsumari Kiyotsu Soko Museum of Art ［SoKo］

A novel museum utilizing the former Kiyotsukyo Elementary School, showcasing large-scale artworks in expansive spaces. The gymnasium serves as both a storage facility and gallery, while the school building functions as a warehouse museum displaying artworks by Isobe Yukihisa. Special Exhibitions are held periodically in the gymnasium. (Irregular opening hours)
