Located deep in the mountains of Matsunoyama, a region known for heavy snowfall, this museum is dedicated to the natural sciences. In winter, it withstands a 2,000-ton load beneath deep snow, much like a submarine. Its serpentine shape evokes the surrounding walking trails. Made entirely of welded steel plates, the “snake” changes its length by nearly 20 centimeters between winter and summer. The surrounding area retains a rich natural environment and serves as a treasure trove of wildlife found in traditional rural landscapes. The museum offers a variety of hands-on programs that make the most of this natural setting. The nickname “Kyoro-ro” was given to the museum in reference to the call of the scarlet kingfisher—a bright red kingfisher that migrates from the south during the rice-planting season in the Matsunoyama area of Tokamachi city—which sounds like “Kyoro-ro….”
We offer experiential programs that allow you to fully immerse your senses in the rich nature and culture of Matsunoyama. We also accept requests for custom programs tailored to specific themes. In our popular “Satoyama Wildlife Exploration” program, participants head out into the satoyama with Kyoro staff to experience the seasonal beauty of the landscape and engage in activities such as collecting and observing wildlife.
There is a beech forest about 90 years old known as the “Forest of Beauties” because of its striking appearance. It offers something to enjoy in every season—from the melting snow of spring to the fresh greenery of early summer and the vibrant autumn foliage. Rare wild birds also make their home here.
