Facility Info and Map

The Matsudai “Nobutai” is a central facility designed by the Dutch architectural firm MVRDV. Approximately 40 artworks are scattered across the roughly 2-kilometer stretch of satoyama landscape between the Matsudai “Nobutai” and Matsudai Castle at the mountaintop; this entire area is known as “Matsudai NOHBUTAI Field Museum Matsudai NOHBUTAI.”

As you explore the artworks in Matsudai, you’ll encounter the region’s numerous Rice Fields (fields built on sloping mountain terrain), diverted-water rice fields (fields created by redirecting river flow), and the natural beauty of the satoyama landscape, allowing you to experience over 1,000 years of snow country farming culture. In addition to viewing artworks by world-renowned artists, visitors can catch glimpses of local residents living and working in the rice fields. Numerous programs are held throughout the year, allowing visitors to experience the region’s natural culture—such as rice planting in spring, rice harvesting in autumn, and snow play in winter. At the on-site cafeteria, visitors can enjoy dishes made with local ingredients, making this an area where you can fully savor “art,” “food,” and “agriculture.”

The area where you can best experience the satoyama landscape and art

The area is dotted with artworks by world-renowned artists, including Ilya&Emilia Kabakov’s “The Rice Fields” and Kusama Yayoi’s “Tsumari in Bloom.” You can enjoy the charm of contemporary art alongside the four seasons of the satoyama landscape, with colorful sculptures that stand out beautifully against the natural surroundings. The walk takes about 1 to 2 hours, and you can also explore the area by car.

Inside the museum, “10 Albums, Labyrinth” (2021) and four other artworks are on display.
