“En” is a unique Japanese word that can be expressed in a single character to convey concepts such as “chance encounter,” “connection,” and “fate”—concepts that other languages express with multiple words. Additionally, “Ennichi” is a summer tradition—a time-honored festival held at shrines and temples, featuring street stalls offering games like goldfish scooping and target shooting, as well as food and drink stands. People can enjoy themselves, play, and stroll about, experiencing a fleeting escape from their daily lives. In this exhibition, themed around “Ennichi,” we focus on games of all sizes and present a collection of artworks that can be enjoyed alone or with others.

The title of this exhibition, “Cancer Queen,” is derived from the science fiction novel of the same name by Tommaso Randolfi. “Cancer” shares the meaning of both the constellation Cancer and the disease cancer; in the novel, the spaceship named “Cancer Queen” moves back and forth between metaphors of crustaceans and disease as the story unfolds.Ryosuke Higo, too, has made it a central theme of his artwork to layer metaphor upon metaphor, bringing certain elements together, making leaps of imagination, and creating yet another (yes, yet another!) metaphor. Within the science fiction genre—which has always drawn particularly strong inspiration from the imagination regarding the unknown and the new—Higo makes no secret of his influence from the cyberpunk subgenre. With a greater emphasis on imagery and worldview than on plot or structure, the intuition required to understand words becomes even more important than language itself. In this exhibition, such cyberpunk rhetoric is taken a step further, as the artist seeks to incorporate the rhetoric itself into his creative process.
Artists once said they wanted to create something like infrastructure; they spoke of building a “free port,” a “server,” a “score,” and a “musical instrument.” However, they say all of these are merely metaphorical expressions. Perhaps we do not need to understand the artists’ words literally; rather, what is required in this exhibition—or indeed, in this world—is an understanding of the differences in their modes of expression.[Guest Curator] Mayu Hiyama (Curator / Recruit Art Center)

“The Ruler of Imagination: Let’s Measure the Distance to Cancer”
A “light-year” is a unit of distance used to measure the distance from us to the stars. When we’re dealing with truly astronomical distances—ones we can only imagine—we need a new unit rather than an existing one. That’s right: units are tools we use to imagine the space between one thing and another. In this workshop, we’ll imagine the lengths of objects around us and create our own rulers. Together, we’ll decide on a unit of measurement for these rulers and let our imaginations wander to the distance to the constellation Cancer.

Even in this environment, the NUNAGAWA Campus is hosting workshops in collaboration with artists, where children—who will shape the future—can develop a sense of physical awareness through their five senses and experience the inherent appeal of the materials themselves.

The character “艹” is pronounced “sō” and is a radical representing plants and flowers; “田” represents land, and “人” represents people. Its shape resembles the movement of a needle, symbolizing how people connect humanity and nature through needlework. Hong Kong, bustling with noise, and Tsunan town, enveloped in silence. These two distant lands each possess distinct climates, landscapes, and rhythms of life.Centering on the “人” radical, the artist traveled between these two places, gathering 49 stories that delicately reflect the land, memories, and daily life. Through embroidery—a form of needlework—the artist has woven a collective memory that transcends regional boundaries, allowing the city and the mountain village to converse and intertwining the past with the present.
