Since his university days, when his mentor—the world-renowned artist Allan Kaprow—asked him about the origins of his creative work and he replied, “Farmer” (his own translation of “hyakusho”), Ryosaku Miyasaka has continued to produce artworks connected to the earth. While continuing his artistic practice alongside his work as a farmer in his hometown, this marks his first large-scale solo exhibition at the age of 75.In addition to early artworks from his “Map Paintings” series—including previously unseen artworks—and his recent “Plant Characters” series, the exhibition will feature new artworks created last year in Echigo-Tsumari during the rice-planting and rice-harvesting seasons.

Echigo-Tsumari MonET Special Exhibition Vol. 11: Ryosuke Higo, “Cancer Queen”

The title of this exhibition, “Cancer Queen,” is derived from the science fiction novel of the same name by Tommaso Randolfi. “Cancer” shares the meaning of both the constellation and the disease, and within the novel, the spaceship named “Cancer Queen” navigates between metaphors of crustaceans and illness as the story unfolds.Ryosuke Higo, too, has made it a central theme of his artwork to layer metaphor upon metaphor, bringing certain elements together, making leaps, and creating yet another (yes, yet another!) metaphor. Within the genre of science fiction, which has always drawn particularly strong inspiration from the imagination of the unknown and the new, Higo makes no secret of his influence from the cyberpunk subgenre. With a greater emphasis on imagery and worldview than on story or structure, the intuition required to understand words becomes even more important than language itself. In this exhibition, such cyberpunk rhetoric is taken a step further, attempting to incorporate the rhetoric itself into the creative process.
Artists have once said they wanted to create something like infrastructure; they spoke of building free ports, servers, scores, and instruments. However, they say all of these are merely metaphorical expressions. Perhaps we do not need to correctly understand the artists’ words; rather, what is required in this Special Exhibition—no, in this world—is an understanding of the differences in their modes of expression.
