The venue is the former Kamigo Junior High School in Tsunan Town, Niigata Prefecture, which closed in 2012. Renovated and opened in the summer of 2015, the Echigo-Tsumari Kamigo Clove Theatre was conceived as a hub for the performing arts within the “Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale,” held in the Echigo-Tsumari region.This facility allows performers to create and stage artworks while staying in this nature-rich region. It aims to explore the potential of performing arts in the local community and serve as a venue for exchange between urban and rural areas. Outside of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field period, the venue welcomes groups—both professional and amateur—engaged in music, dance, theater, and other performing arts who wish to use the space for residencies, intensive rehearsals, or performances.

Performance

"Farming implements as instruments!" by Oka Makoto

The artist transforms farm tools that were given to him by local people into musical instruments and present them at Tsunan Junior High School. The music instruments keep their original shapes of old farm tools and everyday articles and produce tones following the way they used to be used. The artist who is a professional jazz musician gives a live performance using the farm tool instruments with guest musicians as well as organises an event to play music with students from Tsunan Junior High School.

Hong Kong House 2026 Special Exhibition

【Hong Kong House 2026 Special Exhibition】“STiTCH OUR iNNER LAND （艹田人）” , by Toby Crispy and Mire Yu

For the 2026 Hong Kong House Special Exhibition, we will present artworks featuring upcycled clothing motifs created by sewing together vintage fabrics embroidered with “memories of the community we want to preserve” by residents of Hong Kong and Tsunan.

Akeyama Arts Center

In Akiyamago, once designated as an area exempt from compulsory education, a closed school building from 2022 will open in 2024 as "a new school for learning the skills necessary for human survival from the mountains." It is a continuous space and project for exploring, learning, and sharing the wisdom and techniques for survival cultivated in Akiyamago, together with artists, residents, and researchers.

Katakuri House

Katakuri House is an accommodation venue housed in a renovated former school from the 19th century. Located in the hidden scenic area of Akiyamago, the school was the educational hub for local children for 108 years before its closure in 1992. The local staff members at Katakuri House who are enchanted by the abundant nature and history of Akiyamago look forward to welcoming you with its comfortable rooms and delicious cuisine.
