We are pleased to present a special exhibition by Ohmura Yukino, an artist who creates paintings using round adhesive labels commonly found in stationery.
This exhibition presents, as an installation incorporating new display methods, a newly produced large-scale painting of the nightscape of Echigo-Tsumari—one of the largest works in Ohmura’s recent practice—alongside paintings depicting urban night scenes.
For an artist based in Tokyo, nightscapes had never been something to fear; rather, she had even grown bored with the constant brightness of nights illuminated until dawn.
However, when she found herself spending nights alone in Tokamachi during a site visit, experiencing solitude for the first time, her understanding of urban nights and rural nights was profoundly overturned. The nights in Tokamachi were dark and unsettling. She spent hours observing the beech forest outside the window, repeatedly imagining being attacked by wild animals, unable to sleep until morning.
An essay describing these emotional states is applied to the window using cutting sheet lettering, while a painting recreating the nighttime forest of Tokamachi—measuring 3 meters wide by 1.5 meters high—is installed alongside it.Through experiences unimaginable in the city, the artist explores the fragility of the worldview she has formed over her life, expressing this theme through both painting and essay.
