Summary

Detailed explanation

[Performers]Oka Makoto, Aikawa Hitomi, Uematsu Toru, Okabe Yoichi, Huruki keisuke, Echigo-Tsumari Kapukapu Ensemble 2024

Local residents and musicians will deliver a diverse range of sounds played with agricultural tools. Breathing new life into agricultural and folk tools that quietly sleep in the corners of barns, which are taken for granted in daily life, we will hold a festival that invites them onto the stage. Led by jazz musician Oka Makoto, who also conducts a project of playing music with waterwheels and agricultural tools, a orchestra consisting of local residents has been formed for the concert. Together, they will showcase a variety of sounds with the agricultural instruments they have created. Professional musicians who have close ties with the playwright will also join the performance, adding a touch of elegance.

Echigo-Tsumari Kapukapu Ensemble 2024

The band named after the onomatopoeia “kapukapu” from Miyazawa Kenji’s short children’s story “Yamanashi” is led by musician Oka Makoto. Together with Oka, they create musical instruments from farming tools and folk implements that lie dormant in the region, and play music with those instruments. The members come from various regions, and most of them lead lives that are usually far removed from music. During rehearsals, they do not use sheet music but instead rely on Oka’s vocalizations such as “dondon” and “dadatta.” Please also enjoy the permanent installation artwork “Farming Tools are Musical Instruments!” (Location: Kamigo Clove Theater) by Oka Makoto + The Music Mill Project.
