Echigo-Tsumari Winter is coming again!

In winter, Echigo-Tsumari’s landscape transforms completely, turning into a land of deep snow—something unimaginable in summer. “Echigo-Tsumari Art Field Winter 2025” invites you to fully enjoy the unique scenery, food culture, and art that emerge precisely because of this snowy environment.

Experience exhibitions exploring the winter culture of Echigo-Tsumari, outdoor activities that let you enjoy the snow itself, and the “Yukimi Gozen” meal featuring preserved foods rooted in local wisdom. Come and discover the charms of Echigo-Tsumari that can only be experienced in winter. (Details of each exhibition will be announced later.)

Outdoor Exhibition

The winter exhibition will be directed once again by BankART1929, who curated the summer–autumn exhibition “The answer is blowin’ in the wind.” Workshops will also be held during the exhibition period. Details will be announced gradually.

Echigo-Tsumari MonET Exhibition Series Vol.9 Kurachi Tomonosuke

An exhibition will be held by artist Kurachi Tomonosuke, who creates video installations in which he both stars and directs. His work focuses on the “humor” that arises unexpectedly in everyday life and on the behaviors of objects that give rise to it.

An installation that explores the intertwined “territories” of nature and humans in the Echigo-Tsumari environment through “snow-buried works” and “snow-floating works.”

History Museumu Exhibition Tanaka Nozomi: Sealing the Seasons, Unfolding the Harvest.

The artist conducts research on the region, focusing on preserved foods—a craft that is becoming increasingly rare—and presents an exhibition exploring seasonal connections and diversity centered on daily life and livelihoods.

On weekends and national holidays, visitors can enjoy an irori (hearth) experience inside the museum, which includes tasting preserved foods featured in the exhibition.

Satoyama Snow Amusement Park

During the snowy season, the Field Museum is completely covered in white snow. Paths disappear, and the landscape transforms into something unrecognizable compared to its spring–autumn appearance. Enjoy seasonal art, local experiences, and snow activities in this one-of-a-kind winter setting.

Exhibition Ohmura Yukino "Wunschloses Unglück"

An exhibition by artist Ohmura Yukino , who creates works using round stickers for stationery, will be held. The exhibition features artworks depicting Echigo-Tsumari and Tokyo nightscapes. Additionally, visitors can enjoy a round sticker workshop inspired by Echigo-Tsumari anytime inside the museum.

■Akeyama Arts Center

Symposium "Exploring Ways for Cities and Mountains to Coexist"

We invite anthropologist Ishikura Toshiaki for a keynote lecture and symposium. In addition to Ishikura, the symposium will feature artist Fukasawa Takafumi (supervisor of Akeyama) and  Nagasawa Aoi (participating artist of Akeyama).

The symposium will explore human coexistence with bears, a topic that has gained attention as a pressing social issue in recent years. It will provide an opportunity for both urban and mountain residents to reflect together on the relationship between city life and life in the mountains.

Guest: Ishikura Toshiaki (Anthropologist / Associate Professor, Arts & Roots, Akita University of Art) Born in Tokyo in 1974. His research focuses on comparative mythology across the Pacific Rim and on artistic studies exploring representations of non-human species.

■Tokamachi Snow Festival:collaboration program

As part of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field collaboration program, a special event will be held at the main venue of the Tokamachi Snow Festival (Tokamachi City Nishi Elementary School) from February 20 (Fri) to 22 (Sun). Visitors can enjoy a large-scale round sticker workshop and artwork by Ohmura Yukino, who is currently presenting an exhibition at NUNAGAWA Campus.

Winter Echigo-Tsumari Journey [Yukimi-Gozen Lunch Trip]

For lunch, you will enjoy wintertime cuisine filled with the wisdom and culture of the snow country. The stopping place for lunch “Yukimi Gozen” will change depending on the course, so please enjoy the local cuisine and hospitality of each village. For those who are not comfortable driving on snowy roads or those who come by public transportation, we recommend that you have a driver who is familiar with Echigo-Tsumari’s roads.

A tour exploring the remote Akiyama-go area in midwinter. Participants will visit the Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel and the artwork Akeyama Arts Center, Akiyama-go, which reflects the wisdom of living with the mountains. Lunch featuring local ingredients will be served at Katakuri House. Experience the serene beauty and quiet atmosphere unique to Akiyama-go in the depths of winter.

Katakuri House

Akiyama-go, an unexplored region with such heavy snowfall that it was once exempted from compulsory education by the national government. The accommodation facilities are warm and comfortable, renovated from an abandoned school into Japanese-style rooms. The meals and hot spring baths will warm your body and soul. Please enjoy a special moment to experience this unexplored region of heavy snowfall.

Sansho House

Dormitory-type accommodation in a renovated 70-year-old wooden school building. More than 10 people can stay in this dormitory even in winter when the school building is covered with snow.
