Echigo-Tsumari Kapukapu Ensemble 2025

Summary

A festival of farm tools!

This is a one-of-a-kind orchestra that performs with instruments made by their own hands from disused farm tools and folk tools. The band is a unique one, playing on instruments made by their own hands from unused farm tools and folk implements. Please be a witness to it.

Echigo-Tsumari Kapukapu Ensemble

A citizen’s orchestra led by musician Oka Makoto. The name of the band comes from the onomatopoeia “kapu-kapu” in Kenji Miyazawa’s short children’s story “Yamanashi”. The instruments used in the band are made by the members themselves from farm tools and folk tools that lie dormant in the region. The members come from various regions, and have a wide range of ages and backgrounds. No musical scores are used in practice, and oral songs such as “dondong,” “dadatta,” and “kapu kapu” are mainly used.

[New members wanted!]
The activities of the “Echigo-Tsumari Kapukapu Ensemble” vary from making farming tools instruments to practicing performances. Why not take this opportunity to become familiar with music and participate in the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale together with the artists? No previous experience with musical instruments is required, so anyone who is interested is welcome to join us. Please contact us at the contact phone number if you would like to observe or participate in the event.
