【Information on 2024/2/19】
Sales of the “2024 Passport with Tanaka Min “Ryōkan in the Snow” (voucher) have been suspended as the seats are now full.
Ahead of the “Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2024” (2024/7/13-11/10) to be held from next summer, Tanaka Min will hold a snow performance “Ryōkan in the Snow” this winter.
In all-white world, Ryōkan looks forward to the spring when he can play with local children, which comes after the absolute abstraction and concrete hardships of snow. It is said that many people from villages far and wide tramped the snowy paths to attend the funeral of Ryōkan, who was adored by the people.
I look forward to seeing how Tnaka Min will dance Ryōkan in the overwhelming snow.
In the latter half of the program, the Ondekoza, a taiko drum group with close ties to the festival, will join in to recreate the “Bon Odori” dance that Ryōkan liked to perform with his people.
(Kitagawa Fram, General Director of Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale)
Dance: Tanaka Min
Music: Ishihara Rin
Taiko: The Ondekoza

In 1974, Tanaka embarked on his own journey of dancing and developed an alternative style of dance called “hyper-dance”. He made an international debut in 1978 at the Louvre museum. In the 1980s, he conducted many avant-garde performances in the former communist territories, resulting in highly regarded international claims. In 1985 he moved to live in a village in a mountain and has continued dance practice based upon agriculture to the present time. Since his first appearance in a film in 2002, he has participated in films both in Japan and abroad. The documentary of Tanaka Min called “The Unnameable Dance” (directed by Inudo Isshin) was launched on 28 January 2022 and is currently a nationwide roadshow.
