For the “Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2018,” Chinese architect Ma Yansong / MAD Architects renovated the entire Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel as an artwork.By utilizing the “Five Elements” of nature (trees, earth, metal, fire, and water), they created an architectural space with an artistic atmosphere, transforming this historic tunnel. The project aims to rethink the relationship between humans and nature and reconnect both local residents and visitors with the overwhelming beauty of the land.
