About the artwork

In 2015, the former Kiyotsukyo Elementary School—which closed in 2009—was renovated into a warehouse museum that combines a large-scale artwork storage facility with a gallery. The neutral, minimalist space—suitable for a facility exhibiting large-scale contemporary artworks—was created through an innovative concept: stripping the gymnasium’s wooden floor to expose the existing concrete foundation and constructing new concrete walls behind the existing ones (awarded the Excellence Prize at the “25th AACA Awards” [organized by the Japan Association of Architectural Art and Crafts]).Since then, it has operated regularly as a base facility and hosts Special Exhibitions from time to time. In 2017, the school building was further renovated and reborn as the “Isobe Yukihisa Memorial Echigo-Tsumari Kiyotsu Soko Museum of Art,” which houses and exhibits a collection of artworks by artist Isobe Yukihisa.
