Prologue to the Exhibition Series
The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale has been working to revitalize local communities through art. In order to make the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale even more community-based, we will explore new possibilities for the region and art, meet the artists who will lead the future, and create new collaborations. The Museum on Echigo-Tsumari (MonET) plans to organize and hold a series of long-term exhibitions starting in 2023.

The rough texture, the roughness, and the quietness. The reflection of light sparkling in the midst of it. The loneliness and dimness are locked up, but still emit color and light. We are pleased to present a solo exhibition of Tanaka Ai, a painter from Aichi Prefecture who paints using such painting materials.
By striking a dot, she draws a line, which before long becomes a surface. Her paintings, which freely move back and forth between illustration and drawing, overlap with her attitude toward her theme, in which she pursues with wonder the cycles that occur on the earth and in the universe in which we live, and the laws by which they are formed.
The title “Reverse String” is derived from an essay by Nishiwaki Junzaburo, a poet from Niigata Prefecture, who described buckwheat noodles as “wildly hardened string. When paint is applied to form a shape and become a painting, it is the sparkle of the particles that attracts attention in reverse.
This exhibition is set in Tokamachi in the middle of winter, when snow is falling in a heavy, sometimes pounding, downpour, and is composed of new works by artists who attempt to create a world that can be recomposed in a circle by painting from line to circle all at once.

Painting before you know it by moving your body? This is a workshop to create paintings with snow with artists Tanaka Ai, who is also an exhibiting artist at this exhibition. Let’s experience the sensation of creating something big before you know it, by using snow as a painting medium and using your whole body!

Tanaka Ai
Born 1992 in Aichi, Japan, he completed his Master’s degree in Oil Painting and Printmaking at Aichi University of the Arts in 2016. Recent exhibitions include “VOCA 2023: Vision of Contemporary Art – New Flat Artists”, The Ueno Royal Museum, Tokyo, Japan; “Drawing Circles with Burnham”, COCOTO by COCO Gallery, Kyoto, Japan; solo exhibition “Got a Light”, SANTOKO GALLERY, Nagano, Japan in 2022. “Life”, awai art center, Nagano, Japan in Nagano, etc.
Guest Curator Profile
Hiyama Maaru (Curator / Recruit Art Center)
Born in Osaka in 1994. Major curatorial projects include “Tanihara Natsuko’s Kitakagaya Kitan” (CCO Creative Center, and others) in 2023, “Fallout Families” in 2022, and “Occult Yo Soi” (Decameron) in 2021. Major lectures and workshops include “I Like to Lie: On Curatorial Bluff and Realism” (PARA) in 2023 and “Shuffle Distributive Editorial Writing W” (Aichi University of the Arts) in 2022. This year’s goal has been revised upward to “Guerrilla Nature Adventure”.
