Prologue to the Exhibition Series
The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale has been working to revitalize local communities through art. In order to make the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale even more community-based, we will explore new possibilities for the region and art, meet the artists who will lead the future, and create new collaborations. The Museum on Echigo-Tsumari (MonET) plans to organize and hold a series of long-term exhibitions starting in 2023.

Haruka Matsumoto is an artist who has been attracting attention for adding new life to the historical longstanding medium—printmaking. Matsumoto’s practice is mainly focusing on the role that printmaking briefly played as a form of journalism during the early Meiji period in Japan. Whether the mainstream photographs and videos used in news today truly convey “facts”, or instead, do these mediums serve to emphasise stirring human emotions? With those thoughts in mind, Matsumoto has developed a methodology wherein she visits the scene of events that pique her interest, conducts research, and then creates a single image—printmaking to reveal the event. During this process, the figures involved in the events are replaced by Matsumoto’s self-portraits. This substitution appears to suggest that news recipients are also, in a way, contributors to the shaping of the “event”. This exhibition is set to feature eight printmaking artworks, including one new piece, as well as five hand-drawn wall newspapers aimed at providing contexts to the background of the artworks.

Admission Fee: Individual tickets (¥1,200 for adults / ¥600 for elementary and junior high school students) or a common ticket for “Echigo-Tsumari Art Field 2023”.

Related event: "Prints without engraving!” Workshop
In this workshop, Matsumoto will lead you in observing the living creatures in front of you and turn them into printmaking artworks. Using the technique of “lithography,” you can make printmaking without carving on woodblock. Come join us for this free printmaking experience with artist Haruka Matsumoto of the special exhibition.

Haruka Matsumoto is a printmaker and artist. Matsumoto completed studies in Printmaking at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Kyoto City University of Arts in 2018. Recent exhibitions include “Distance from the Incident – How News, War, Daily Life were Described” at the Machida City Museum of Graphic Arts in 2023.
Kenjiro Hosaka (Director of The Museum of Modern Art, Shiga)
Born in 1976 in Ibaraki. Completed the master’s program at Keio University. Worked at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (MOMAT) from 2000 to 2020 and has been director of the Museum of Modern Art, Shiga since 2021. Notable curated exhibitions include “Francis Bacon Exhibition”(2013), “Logical Emotion: Contemporary Art from Japan”(2014-2015), “The Voice Between: The Art and Poetry of Yoshimasu Gozo” (2016) at the MOMAT.
