The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale1 2024, set in the Echigo-Tsumari region (Tokamachi and Tsunan Towns) in Niigata Prefecture, offers a wonderful range of products, including rice and sake produced from the fertile soil and beautiful water, original Art Triennale goods and products redesigned by designer Kawakami Eriko from Echigo-Tsumari’s specialities. Among them are new products that have been on sale since 13 July, 2024.

Kawakami Eriko

Kawakami Eriko is a Japanese art director and graphic designer who has been involved in the design of official Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale merchandise since the 8th Triennale. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. Major works include branding for RURU MARY’S, LUMINE NEWoMan The Bargain, LAFORET XMAS, NHK TV series HALF, BLUE. Title back art direction, etc. His activities are wide-ranging, with graphic design as a cornerstone. Major awards include the JAGDA New Designer Award, JAGDA Award and ADC Award.

The design focuses on summer nature. Wild vegetables found in Echigo-Tsumari and udo, the white flowers that bloom in summer, are finished in monotone. The embroidered natural forms are extracted on top of the silk printing, giving the piece a simple, cool impression with a playful touch.

A pop, modern take on a vegetable fertiliser bag, with weeds cut from farm work placed on the bag. The purple print on a white background with red points gives a summery feel to the colouring.

A landscape of plants and crumb shoots found in Echigo-Tsumari’s mountain fields, on banks, grass bushes and roadsides, stretching towards the sky. Printed on dark grey silk to blend in with the black background.

The design features a blue line graphic focus on a photo of plant shadows, processed with a warm-coloured filter. The impactful design looks great on a white background and gives a cool impression even with long sleeves. The generous size of this piece allows for casual wear.

This tote bag focuses on everyday life in Tsumari. The design on the front is a photo of a round-roofed garage with shapes extracted with white lines. On the reverse side, a scene of dried plums being prepared was chosen. The contrast between the bright red and blue colours, lit by the strong sunlight, evokes a rural summer scene.

Designed with a motif of wild vegetables such as tulips, butterbur sprouts and tara no buds. An essential item that can be used throughout the season. The pink colour is glamorous, while the green and calm tones of the wild vegetables make it suitable for use for a long time, regardless of age.

▽Miyuki donuts

Miyuki donuts with sweet bean paste from Sekiguchi Confectionery, a regular treat in Echigo-Tsumari.


▽Tsumari soba

Soba noodles made with freshly ground buckwheat flour, milled in-house from carefully selected brown buckwheat at Tamagaki Seimen. The use of nunonori (seaweed) as a binding agent gives it a rich flavour, unique firmness and smooth texture.


▽Tsubomboko

Main product of confectionery Kimuraya. A popular product of Kimuraya, a long-established confectionery in Tokamachi, made by wrapping a whole soft chestnut in rich yellow bean paste and wrapping it in a folded pie.


▽Amazake (white rice / brown rice)

Non-alcoholic, hand-made amazake made from home-grown rice, using reduced pesticides and no chemical fertilisers.


▽Drip coffee (wild vegetables/Kanjiki/terraced rice)

The deep, earthy richness is accented with the fragrance of nuts and forest fruits. It evokes the richness of the earth’s bounty, which is connected to the snow.


▽Tsumari snacks (shiomame / mabushi ginger / snacks / buckwheat chocolate cookies)

A series of snacks that make the most of the delicious taste of the ingredients.

Artists’ works developed on the NUNAGAWA Campus and collaborative products only available here are sold. The chef’s special deep-fried curry buns, available only on Saturdays and Sundays, are also highly recommended. Numbers are limited, so buy early.
