Moriyama Mirai will perform at the “Last Class” as a stage, the artwork created in 2006 by Christian Boltanski and Jean Kalman. “Something that is no longer there but used to exist there. An overwhelming “absence” rising up because of being confronted. Withered rice straw symbolises the end of the harvest while at the same time it becomes the earth that attracts new sprouts. The monster of a snowball that can swallow everything born out of the blizzard will eventually melt and become water for life. The performance will take inspiration from the world view of Boltanski contrasting existence and absence which are dark but beautiful contours and customs of Echigo-Tsumari.” (The artist’s comment)
Moriyama studied various genres of dance from the age of five and made his full-fledged stage debut at the age of 15. In 2013, he was appointed as one of the Japan Cultural Envoys by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, spent one year in Israel, and worked in various countries in Europe while having his base at Inbal Pinto&Avshalom Pollak Dance Company. He has been expanding his horizon as an expressionist without being categorised into a conventional framework. He received the best actor award for his performance in the film called “Underdog” for the 75th Mainichi Film Award and the 94th Kinema Junpo. “in-side-out”, the film he directed was nominated as one of the competition works for the SSFF & Asia 2021. He was a general director for a performance called “Re: Incarnation” held at Kiyoimzudera in Kyoto on 11 March 2021. In June 2021, he performed at “Unexplored Unfulfilled Ghost and Monster”. He danced a requiem at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympic 2020. Post-Botoh School.
