Ukraine Week

Summary

This summer, at the Museum on Echigo-Tsumari, MonET, there will be a drawing exhibition by Ilya Kabakov, who is from Dnipro (formerly part of the Soviet Union, now Ukraine) and deeply connected to Echigo-Tsumari, and a solo exhibition by Nikita Kadan, a representative figure in the contemporary art scene of Ukraine. During the opening week of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2024, there will be a Symposium: ‘The Present State of Ukrainian Art and Culture,’ the first screening of ‘Ukraine Art Films Now’ in Japan, and an introduction to Ukrainian food and culture as part of ‘Ukraine Week.’ (*Reservations will be accepted from 6/23.)

7/12 (Friday): Ukraine Art Films Special screening

On the day before the opening of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2024, two art films will be screened specially. Includes a commentary talk by Kajiyama Yuji, who created the Japanese subtitles.

7/13(Saturday): Symposium:The Present State of Ukrainian Art and Culture

Nikita Kadan, who still remains in Ukraine and continues to create and exhibit, and other East European literature experts will talk about the current state of art and culture in Ukraine.

7/14 (Wednesday): Ukrainian picture book reading session

Storytelling of picture books about Ukraine, including “The Mitten” based on a Ukrainian folk tale.

7/20(Saturday): Ukrainian Animation Screening Stallone Princess: The Princess of Kieu and Ruslan, directed by Oleh Malamush

The animation film produced in Ukraine to be screened in Japan for the very first time.

《The Unknown Kabakov: Art as a Way to Survive》Ilya Kabakov

Centered around drawings, the exhibition will feature the first-ever public display of graduation works from the 1950s, as well as late works that incorporate new depictions into past monochrome pieces.

《Nikita Kadan: Shadow, flag, satellite, passage》Nikita Kadan

Nikita Kadan presents a series of artworks which he has been drawing since 2022 in war-torn Ukraine, and other works depicting themes such as the connection between humans and the earth, and the relationship between social conditions and people.
