In winter in Echigo-Tsumari, the entire satoyama is completely covered in snow. This year, too, there will be plenty of activities for both children and adults to enjoy, combining SNOW and ART.

The pond filled with water in the center of the MonET transforms into a field of pure white snow in winter. To reconsider the winter in Echigo-Tsumari, one of the heaviest snowfall areas in Japan, and the appeal of snow, four artists will present contemporary art inside and outside the museum. Please come and see the transformation of the artworks along with the various faces of the snow. A playground where visitors can experience local culture will also be available.
Echigo-Tsumari: Aspects of Snow I

Let’s experience an old game handed down in the village. “Hanekkeshi” is Shinzui village is that people play shuttlecock with “kosuki,” an old snow removal tool.

Set in a satoyama in winter, there will be a natural slider using a natural incline, a snow-walking tool called “Kanjiki,” a rice cake baking experience using 100% Kogane-mochi, and colorful artwork that looks great on the snow. There will also be banana boats on the snow and daily mini-events.

Mini events such as making old cloth elephants, kanjiki walking, snowboarding, and snow soccer will be held during the exhibition period. Some of these events can be participated in with the common winter ticket, while others require a separate reservation.

The annual cheese fondue is now on the Satoyama Buffet menu! Enjoy the rich cheese sauce mixed with winter vegetables. In addition, there is a full lineup of seasonal sweets. After lunch, please enjoy it with a cup of hot coffee or tea.

The “Yukimi-gozen” is a special program to enjoy winter dishes, which are served in lacquerware once used for weddings and funerals in the village, and are filled with local wisdom and culture, together with the hospitality of the village. Enjoy this year’s SNOWART and the pure white satoyama scenery as you sway slowly on the bus.

Akiyamago, an unexplored region with such heavy snowfall that it was once exempted from compulsory education by the national government. We have prepared a two-times-only lodging plan to experience the winter in such Akiyamago, with a special viewing of a work at the former Okasawa Branch School, the southernmost and most difficult site in Echigo-Tsumari, which became the venue for the first work in 2022. On the following day, a local guide will take you to Mikurabashi Bridge, known as the setting for the movie “Yureru. Enjoy this special time to experience the unexplored region of heavy snowfall.

Sansho House is a facility of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale that is used by many people including the general public, participating artists, and the festival supporters and Kohebi-tai. Visitors can also view works by world-renowned artist Leandro Erlich.
