Prayers Woven into “White Clothes” in Echigo-Tsumari
“White” symbolises “mourning, purification of death, liberation of the soul, and the colour of angels.” The Moscow-based artist began the “White Clothes” project as a tribute to their late daughter, expanding it worldwide. They were deeply moved by the sight of people working in the fields when visiting Echigo-Tsumari. “My parents also owned a small piece of land in the Urals region, and after working in factories on weekends, they would grow vegetables for the family,” the artist commented. In this new work, the artist exhibits “White Clothes” created from farmers’ working clothes collected with the cooperation of the residents of Tsumari community.
