About the artwork

On the day of the site visit for the art project, Matsudai enjoyed clear skies following a heavy snowfall. Café Reflet (meaning “reflection”) became an artwork that mirrored the daily lives of residents, much like the snow that day. Vilmoot provided residents with about 100 instant cameras and asked them to photograph the views from their windows.Utilizing four circular lights designed for the ceiling by MVRDV, the window views—captured over the course of a year—were arranged by season, and tables with mirrored tops were placed on the floor. During the duration of the exhibition, many people gathered at the “Echigo Matsudai Satoyama Shokudo” restaurant, which served as the artwork space, and enjoyed the townscapes reflected on the tables—viewed through the Koshihikari rice balls and dishes of wild mountain vegetables—along with the green terraced Rice Fields visible through the windows.
