Located deep in the mountains of Matsunoyama, a heavy snowfall area, this educational training facility focuses on natural sciences. In winter, buried under deep snow, it withstands a weight of 2,000 tons like a submarine. Its serpentine shape evokes the surrounding walking trails. This fully welded steel plate snake changes its length by nearly 20 centimeters between winter and summer. The surrounding area retains a rich natural environment, a treasure trove of satoyama wildlife. Utilizing the field, various experiential programs are conducted. The nickname “Kyororo” comes from the call of the red-crested kingfisher (“Kyororo…”), a bright red kingfisher that migrates from the south to the Matsunoyama area of Tokamachi city during rice planting season.
We offer experiential programs that let you fully immerse your senses in Matsunoyama’s rich nature and culture. We also accept requests for custom programs tailored to specific themes. Our signature “Satoyama Creature Exploration” program takes you into the satoyama with Kyororo staff. You’ll experience the satoyama according to the season and engage in activities like collecting and observing creatures.
A beech forest, approximately 90 years old, is known as the “Forest of Beauty” for its graceful appearance. It offers seasonal enjoyment throughout the year: spring with melting snow, early summer with fresh greenery, and autumn with vibrant foliage. Rare wild birds also inhabit the area.
