What is the "Matsudai Rice Fields Bank"?

“The Rice Fields” refer to terraced rice fields that spread across mountain slopes and other hilly terrain. In the Echigo-Tsumari region, you can catch glimpses of this scenery here and there as you explore the artworks. The Rice Fields not only soothe us with their beautiful scenery but also serve as “natural dams” that store rainwater, help prevent landslides, and play a vital role in growing delicious rice. However, in recent years, due to the region’s depopulation and aging population, the number of neglected, fallow Rice Fields has been increasing. The “Matsudai Terraced Rice Field Bank” is a terraced Rice Field conservation project undertaken by the “Echigo-Tsumari Art Filed.” Through the involvement of people both within and outside the region, we aim to preserve this precious landscape and its agricultural practices for future generations.

What You Can Do as a Matsudai Rice Fields Bank Member

① We deliver rice grown in The Rice Fields.

In November, we will send you fresh Koshihikari rice harvested from our Rice Fields. Grown in a natural, lush environment, this rice is rich in flavor and exceptionally delicious. Moreover, tasting rice that you have watched grow yourself offers a special experience that cannot be gained simply by eating it. We invite you to savor the unique flavor that comes from being connected to our Rice Fields.

② You can participate in farm work experiences.

We host seasonal farming events such as rice planting, rice harvesting, and weed whacking. By getting your hands dirty, you can experience firsthand the rhythms of rural life. Another major highlight of this experience is the opportunity to interact with fellow members and local staff. We hope you’ll enjoy spending time in nature and building connections with others.
