Tokamachi used to be known for its kimonos, but its kimono manufacturing industry has waned over time. The artist wished to create a video that poetically expressed this fading tradition. This piece takes inspiration from the words expressing the rain, moon and mist in Akinari Ueda’s Ugetsu Monogatari (Tales of Moonlight and Rain). In using kimono material as a screen, it appears as though there are ghosts or phantoms in the mist. In this installation, the kimono-clad people of Echigo-Tsumari appear on the kimono screen.
