“The Flag of Tsumari and Hostomel” follows a series of sculptures that started with “Gazelka” in 2015. These works feature iron plates damaged by shrapnel, picked from the rubble of Ukrainian homes, and transformed into flags that appear to be fluttering or hanging like fabric. The flag is made from the destroyed roof iron of Hostomel (a town in the northwestern outskirts of Kyiv), and its foundation is a stone from the Shinanogawa River. Here the evidence of disrupted lives is transported from Ukraine to various places around the world, where the materials of war and peace meet one another. Alternatively, it is an encounter with the memory of past wars and disasters hidden within peaceful landscapes.
