About the artwork

At the end of a steep sloping path, a grove of beech shrouded in mist. A mirror-bedecked staircase steps out into a clearing, where from every surface countless eyes catch your gaze. These blue eyes staring out at their observers become the eyes inside ourselves. From a golden rope ladder reaching to the heavens stretch threads inlaid with gold and silver ornaments, shaken by the wind and sprinkling light. The mirror underneath, “Fountain of Light,” seems to project the universe expanding within the soul. The 19 houses making up the village of Aizawa welcomed the artist as one of their own, and their support underlies the finished work.
