MORIYAMA Daido (born 1938) is an internationally acclaimed photographer who have presented large-scale exhibitions and received many awards. He made a spectacular debut as he published “Japan, A Photo Theatre (Nippon Gekijo Shashincho)” in 1968, struck the photography world with his radical snapshots, known as “Are‑Bure‑Boke”.
Moriyama took a photograph of flowers arranged by NAKAGAWA Yukio for the poster of the second ETAT in 2003 and later visited Echigo-Tsumari in order to document “Real Lear in Echigo-Tsumari” (written and directed by Christiaan Bastiaans) which was performed to inaugurate Matsudai Nohbutai. The photographs of flowers blooming along the walkways in the peak of summer, hedges, narrow allays and minka houses represent the essense of a scene of a village in Japan which has been nurtured through long-term engagement between humans and nature. These photos do project a pray for life and a thought about higan.
