About the artwork

Rain, snow, snow melt, and beech forests storing water. . . water throughout Matsunoyama’s natural cycle makes the sounds for the work. Plink, plank, plunk. . . as the drops of water hit our device, with its whorl shaped slits, the sound changes. One never hears the same sound twice. Like a musician, spring water improvises; unexpected rhythms and sequences of sound take shape. Sometimes it is noisy and sometimes quiet. The water passes through the installation and runs to the terraced rice fields below, where it moistens the soil. We want people walking in the tower, and hearing the varied sounds of spring water, to think about this region’s natural environment.
