Ryokan, a priest who lived in the latter half of the Edo Period, had a deep connection with Niigata prefecture and enjoyed spending time with children. He was known as a master of calligraphy and his “Tenjo-okaze” is one of his masterpieces. Taking inspiration from a story where children used to turn Ryokan’s calligraphy into kites and fly them, the artist flies a kite in a classroom of a closed school to remind us of the presence of children in a space where they no longer exist.
