Both these pieces of art give expression to the marvelous vitality found in the many flame-formed vessels dating from the middle Jomon period that have been excavated in Echigo-Tsumari. The artist participated in this Tsumari pottery exhibit, because he found in these artifacts the image of energy erupting from the earth and sprouting with new allure. Tsumari clay is used in Pamela as the material for the balls that are born from her fingers, and in the Woman in the Red Camisole the entire work is covered in raw earth.
