About the artwork

The shapes of tanada (rice terraces) are a symbol of the symbiosis between community people and nature. The artist created lunchboxes in various shapes, modeled on rice terraces. Filled with the rice harvested in the terraces, the lunchboxes became part of the menu served at the restaurant of “Kyororo.” Because of the previous year’s heavy snowfall, the snow in the mountains did not fully melt away even in May, and the artist walked around on foot, looking for rice terraces to use as motifs. There were people standing in line before the restaurant opened, hoping to taste the work that was limited to four servings a day.
