About the artwork

The artist, a landscape designer and sculptor, visited Echigo-Tsumari in the winter and was strongly impressed with the region’s lifestyle that took full advantage of natural materials. The inspiration for this installation comes from houses and gardens, and wood-plank snow fences that protect shrines from Echigo winters. Here, 91 debarked wood poles, with sculpted green stones attached to their tops, have been erected. The stones come from Ehime prefecture where the artist lives. A shrine premises was chosen for the installation. In the solemn atmosphere, the stones, like a forest, sway in the wind.
