About the artwork

Kawamata will create a new and permanent installation on the external façade of the former Shimizu Primary School’s building. Using construction fencing horizontally, they will be installed along the external wall just like a snowshed in winter. This installation will be created in the anticipation to be snow protection in winter and will be open as artwork throughout the year. The inside of the building hosts the “Tsumari Archive Centre”, open to the public for viewing.

Extending from 2022, metal barriers now cascade along the ground, catching the last rays of the setting sun in the western sky. This innovative design, inspired by input from local residents, infuses the landscape with a luminous glow during the twilight hours. Additionally, within the confines of the building, the artist unveils fresh project materials, further enriching the visitor experience.
