Up on Matsunoyama’s Daigonji Highlands, 600 meters above sea level, the artist built a semi-underground steel structure and filled it with about 17 tons of salt. Glass plates to which speakers are attached are thrust into the salt; the speakers constantly transmitted the sounds of Tokamachi throughout the Triennial. The sounds, transmitted over telephone circuits, reach the visitor’s ears via the glass plates.
