The altitude of the sun as it rises in the southern skies is highest when directly south. Measured over the span of a year using the markers of the 24 divisions of the solar year, the rays of the sun as it crosses the meridian, together with one of the shadows woven by all things in the universe in “Compass Forest,” where the piece is located, etch a figure of eight into the ground that is unique to the area. This piece gives form to the eternal relationship between the sun and the earth that the rhythm of nature here has created. Mediated by art, collaboration has begun with members of “Compass Society,” who tend “Compass Forest” all through the seasons.
