About the artwork

“Words” were engraved on 72 benches lined up at a bus stop. The artist and local high school students weaved the words through the course of discussions, imagining various people and finding answers to the question, “what to say to them.” One student had chosen a violent word and was about to carve it on a bench when the artist asked, “are you really sure?” After a few moments of contemplation, he said, “there is a word I have been thinking of,” and he started to carve it silently. It was a beautiful word he engraved, the artist recalls. A place to listen for the voice that whispers.
