About the artwork

Bundles of threads hung to dry before weaving are called kase-ito. By hanging LAN cables, which can be regarded as “contemporary threads,” in a private house in the Futago community, the artist symbolized kase in winter. She also created cat houses (nekotsugura) and placed them in the Taira community. The cat houses were woven with wires in four colors-red, blue, green and brown. The wires were taken from LAN cables whose plastic covers had been stripped away. Ordinarily, the cat houses are made from straw, but very few people carry on this traditional technique. The artist learned how to weave cat houses in Akiyamago and recreated this vanishing tradition of weaving, using LAN cables, which are contemporary materials.
