The relationship between hunters and wildlife depicted from a cave deep in the mountains
As a painter engaged with Tohoku’s hunting and Matagi culture, the artist traces the shifts in people, wildlife, and plants from Akita to the region. Through this research, they visualize the “untold stories” once inherent between the Matagi hunters and the natural world. The subject is a cave called Ryū, used as a resting place deep in the mountains by both people and animals. Using old timber from Matagi settlements, the artist creates structures and murals made with bear glue, presenting an exhibition that evokes the liminal space between the mountain village’s past and future.
