This year’s work resulted from the artist’s strong connection with local volunteers which developed during construction of her 2006 exhibit titled “Circle of the Earth.” Creating a spiral-shaped raised bed garden, the artist grew tomatoes with the local inhabitants of Higashitajiri. Visitors entered the spiral garden, looked for and picked ripe red tomatoes, which they then ate. Recording the maturation of the exhibit in a blog, the intent of the work was to have visitors think about the power we receive from the growing plants. A harvest festival was held during the exhibition period in which various dishes made from the tomatoes were served. [Collaborator: Motohide Tanaka].
