About the artwork

The artist visited Echigo-Tsumari in March, when it was covered in three meters of snow. Seeing the dramatic influence of the severe climate on local people’s lives, the artist became strongly interested in how places where people walk change depending on the season, from streets where snow is cleared to streets that become closed during the winter and streets used for gardening and farming. He did this by researching the streets in each season. In other words, this is a tableau that has been created by the people living in Matsudai over time.
