About the artwork

Communications media, including TV, magazines and the Internet, are all now readily accessible everywhere in Japan. Given the characteristics of most of those media, however, we can learn but not really experience things through them. This project changes that. Visitors are requested to write letters describing what they want and to drop them into the “Dream Postboxes” installed throughout the town. Later they receive the items they have asked for from the virtual town. Our setting up a virtual post office, the postboxes, and postmen in the town, through which desired articles (some made by the children in the sixth grade at Matsudai Primary School) are recerived in actuality, enables the visitor to reconsider the nature of human relationships. For the local school children, the act of making and sending the work through the virtual post office to those who lives far away is an opportunity to experience being the producer and distributor of art instead of the recipient.
