About the artwork

On the day of the site visit, the skies were clear after a heavy snowfall. Caf? Reflet (meaning “reflection”) is a work that reflects the daily life of the inhabitants, just as the surface of the snow did that day. Jean-Luc Vilmouth provided residents with 100 instant cameras and asked them to photograph the landscapes to be seen from their houses’ windows. The artist grouped the year-long series of landscape photographs according to four seasons and installed them on the four circular lighting fixtures designed by MVRDV for the ceiling and placed mirrortopped tables on the floor beneath them. During the Triennial, the restaurant Matsudai Shokudo, operating in this space, attracted many people, who enjoyed rice balls made of Koshihikari brand rice and dishes using edible wild plants along with the landscape images reflected on the tables and the green rice fields visible through the windows.
