A Place to Pass Down the Fundamental Living Techniques of Akiyama
“Suzuki Bokushi penned ‘Hokketsu Seppu’ and ‘Akiyama Kiko,’ offering insights into life in the snow country and the experiences of mountain dwellers during the late Edo period. These pioneering works served to document and disseminate the cultural practices of rural regions beyond the capital, predating the formal establishment of folklore studies. Today, Suzuki’s legacy endures, inspiring numerous individuals to write sequels to ‘Akiyama Kiko’ based on their research into the folk culture of Akiyama.” (The artist’s comment) Since 2022, a compilation room has been established by the artist conducting research in Akiyama. It serves as a space for discussing the communal spirit and bricolage-like lifestyle of Akiyama, as well as delving into topics that have not previously received deliberate attention.
