Born in 1969 in Kobe. Currently resides in Naha, Okinawa since 2016 after living in Berlin in Germany for twelve years. Shimabuku has been presenting performances and installations regarding people, their lives and new ways of communications in relation to the places within and outside Japan to where he has been travelling since early 1990s. He has exhibited internationally at venues like Pompidou Centre (France) and Hayward Gallery (UK) as well as at art festivals such as Venice Biennale (2003, 2027, Italy), São Paulo Art Biennial (2006, Brazil), and Lyon Biennale (2017,France). Publications include “Tobira wo akeru”(littlemore) and picturebook “Kyuri no tabi” (Shogakkan).
