Born in 1965 in Tokyo. Dancer, choreographer. Learnt ballet and piano since childhood. Graduated from Department of French Cultural Studies at Gakushuin University. Moved to New York in 1993 and carried out creative activities with dance companies in the US and participated in performances in Europe. Since 2004, Hirota has played the leading role in self-produced performances and built reputation for sophisticated dance and skillful spatial presentation. Worked on projects to explore alternative possibilities of dance in various spaces beyond the theatrical space as “Atsuko Hirata and Megumi Nakamura” from 2008 to 2017. Hirota has been collaborating with various artists from different disciplines and pursued her unique existence.
